Cobry Campbell cleans the 1971 GMC Serria pick up
which his grandfather purchased new. Cobry plans to install the fuel
injection system and drive this truck to school everyday and next
summer do a frame up on the truck.
To avoid the problems that come with carburetor
engines, Cobry wanted to have the reliability, drivability and
performance of a fuel injection system for what will be his everyday
driver.
The first assignment was to remove the old fuel
system and valve covers.
Once the old system has been removed, Cobry takes
the time to properly clean the intake surface and end rails to insure a
good seal when installing the new fuel injection system.
As Cobry applies a bead of silicone to the end
rails, Jason test fits the passenger side header before coating. Note
in this photo that the old fuel pump has been removed and a cover plate
installed. To supply the needed fuel pressure, we will be installing an
in tank fuel pump. Note: you must use a silicone that is oxygen sensor
friendly.
Before setting the manifold in place is the best
time to install the oil pressure tree from S&P which will allow the
three prong oil pressure switch that is the back up for the fuel pump
and a sender for your stock or after market gauges. This system
monitors the oil pressure and controls the fuel pump. When the oil
pressure is above 8 lbs it will apply power to the fuel pump. The
computer will also turn the fuel pump on for 2 to 3 seconds to load the
fuel rail when you first turn on the key.
Place the new intake gaskets on the cylinder
head. The intake gaskets are supplied with the GM TPI gasket set
provided by S&P. Note that aluminum heads
require a different intake gasket than cast iron heads.
Set the manifold in place and install the bolts
using Teflon pipe sealant GM part #12346004. This sealant is compatible
with oil, water and refrigerant. Ideal for sensor installation (except
02 sensors)
Torque the manifold bolts to 18 ft lbs in the
sequence shown.
After placing the harness on top of the manifold,
we installed the fuel rails by putting a lubricant on the injector
O-ring and placing the rail with all eight injectors on at once. When
the rails are pushed into place and the injectors are seated into the
manifold, use anti-seize on the four top mounting bolts.
S&P also offers this intake that will allow
the installation of a TPI
system onto newer style vortec or fast burn
heads.
Install the air temp sensor into the bottom of
the plenum and plug the harness into the sensor. The upper tube gaskets
have already been installed and the plastic pins on the gaskets will
hold them in place while you position the plenum and insert the bolts.
Since this truck came with the fuel lines on the
passenger side, we are using a Vette fuel rail which connects on the
passenger side front to make the fuel line connections easier.
Camaro/TA fuel lines come out on the drivers side front. S&P can
modify your fuel rails to come out the passenger side rear if desired
or they have a kit where you can modify your own fuel rails.
